Did you know that every year, people around the world come together to celebrate Earth Hour? Here are some interesting Earth Hour facts that you may not have known! Check it out!

Earth Hour is coming up! In case you are not familiar, it’s a global movement where people turn off all their lights for one hour to show support for sustainability and climate action. In this blog post, we will share some Earth Hour facts that everyone should know. Stay tuned for more information on how you can get involved!

1. Brief Earth Hour Facts,
And When Does It Take Place Each Year

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has established a global initiative known as Earth Hour. The yearly event encourages individuals, communities, and organizations to switch off non-essential electric lights for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on a certain day at the end of March, as a symbol of devotion to the environment.

The notion was born in 2004 when WWF Australia discussed ideas with an advertising agency called ‘Leo Burnett Sydney’ about how to persuade people to work together to address the issue of climate change.

The first Earth Hour Day was conducted on March 31, 2007, in Sydney, where over 2.2 million residents and businesses turned off unnecessary lights for one hour. A similar action inspired by Sydney events was carried out in San Francisco in October 2007. Following a successful activity, the team determined to repeat this action every March. Sometimes, when Holy Saturday happens on the last Saturday of March, Earth Hour is relocated a week earlier than usual.

It has now evolved into a global initiative, with people, organizations, and businesses encouraged to turn off non-essential lights for an hour as a show of devotion to the earth.

2. How Many People Participate
In Earth Hour Facts

When Earth Hour initially started in Sydney in 2007, about 2.2 million homes switched off their lights.

Since then, over 7000 households and businesses, as well as notable landmarks, have turned off their lights, plugs, and sockets, considerably lowering global energy consumption. Enterprises and iconic landmarks, such as the Eiffel Tower, Sydney’s Opera House, the Empire State Building, The Great Pyramids, the Burj Khalifa, Big Ben, and the Colosseum, also participate in Earth Hour.

Earth Hour has risen in popularity over the last 19 years, with an increasing number of supporters and participants. In 2021, with many sections of the world still subject to lockdowns and COVID-19 limitations, Earth Hour mobilized more people than ever before to speak out for wildlife.

We saw participation from a record-breaking 192 nations and territories, as well as over 9.6 billion social media impressions, which was more than double the number last year! Earth Hour 2021 received 6.7 billion impressions on social media and other platforms worldwide, including TikTok and LinkedIn. And its related hashtags trended on Twitter or Google search in 42 countries, making 2021 the most successful online event in Earth Hour’s history.

The Virtual Spotlight video, which was launched on the night of Earth Hour and emphasized the relationship between environmental destruction and the increased risk of pandemics, was viewed 2.4 million times in 24 hours. All of this contributed to bringing the nature and climate issues to the forefront of public attention, encouraging action to defend our one and only shared home.

3. The Benefits Of Reducing
Energy Consumption For One Hour

Earth Hour isn’t only about turning off lights. The goal of the awareness hour is to turn off all superfluous lights, plugs, and sockets and observe the global impact.

The mass switch-off/on actions that occur during Earth Hour are safe and do not cause any harm to the power grid. We can calculate how much electricity we save by participating in the 60-minute lights out challenge together.

It all comes back to the fundamental principle of energy efficiency: the energy you save is the energy you don’t use. Energy-saving measures, such as turning off non-essential lights and purchasing more energy-efficient equipment, are significant climate activities that we can readily implement to protect our world.

Global Impacts Of Earth Hour Facts

On the other side, we can easily discern Earth Hour’s influence and impact on environmental conservation actions. These are some examples:

  • WWF Uganda established the world’s first Earth Hour Forest in 2013 to combat the country’s alarming deforestation pace, which results in the removal of 6,000 hectares of woodland each month. The organization has obtained over 2,700 hectares of deteriorated land and plans to plant at least 500,000 indigenous trees.
  • More than 250,000 Russians signed a petition calling for improved preservation of their country’s waters and forests. A bill aimed at safeguarding Russia’s oceans from oil contamination has been introduced in the Russian State Duma.
  • Argentina used its 2013 Earth Hour campaign to help approve a Senate bill for a 3.4 million hectare Marine Protected Area in the country, increasing the percentage of marine areas protected by Argentina from 1% to 4%.
  • About 17 million trees have been planted in Kazakhstan.
  • Thousands of wood-saving stoves have been handed to Madagascar families.
  • Solar-powered lights have been installed in three villages in India that do not have electricity.
  • In Paraguay, WWF used the Earth Hour platform to rally public support for an extension of the logging moratorium, therefore reducing deforestation.
  • Thailand and Taiwan have also implemented school education programs.
  • Girl scouts in the United States installed hundreds of thousands of LED lights.
  • Earth Hour City Challenge 2014 participants submitted over 2,123 mitigating measures.

But these are only a few of the highlights of what has grown into the world’s largest grassroots environmental movement. There are many more Earth Hour facts and stories out there that we are still discovering, as well as much more work for everyone to do!
