Looking to add a few hippies wear to your wardrobe? Or maybe you are just curious about what it means to dress like a hippie. Either way, this post is for you!

Hippies have been a staple of American culture for over 50 years. Though their heyday may be in the past, hippie fashion is still alive and well. Dressing like a hippie is all about being comfortable, expressing your individuality, and embracing natural fabrics and materials. If you are interested in giving this style a try, here are some hippies wear tips to get you started.

Hippies Wear – Tops

1. Dress In Secondhand Clothing

Clothing in muted color palettes or with delicate floral motifs is ideal for a hippy wardrobe. There is a suggestion that you shop at thrift stores, flea markets, and garage sales whenever possible. Though you can obtain hippie-style clothing elsewhere, the whole point of hippie fashion was to abandon buying what major corporations were offering in favor of buying old items locally.

Furthermore, many hippies enjoy sewing and other handicrafts. It’s much better if you can sew your own hippies-wear garments.

2. Wear Shirts That Are Loose, Comfy, And Natural

A simple tee will work if you have other accessories to dress it up with, but try to select for faded, vintage, or used tees. Hipsters have mainly claimed sarcastic and vintage shirts, but that doesn’t mean you can’t dabble in them as well. If you wish to venture out, there are more possibilities for you to consider:

  • Incorporate tie-dyed shirts in your wardrobe. Sure, they shouldn’t be worn every day, but they are a terrific choice from time to time.
  • Dashikis can liven up otherwise dreary clothing with vibrant colors and tribal motifs.
  • Another source of hippie clothes inspiration is India.
  • Long-sleeved peasant blouses are a favorite option among hippies because they are elegant without being fussy.

3. Put On A Vest

A vest is an excellent choice for accessorizing with different tops. The suede fringe vest was a great option for both men and women in the 1960s, at the height of hippiedom.

4. Pick Out Your Jacket With Care

Although the vintage denim jacket is a traditional hippy look, there are different hippies wear possibilities if you want to mix it up. Go for it if it features beads, embroidery, or patterned trim. Leather, suede, sheepskin, and even fur are all acceptable materials. On some occasions, an army jacket may be suitable, yet some hippies may misinterpret the apparel. To make your intentions known, you may embroider peaceful slogans on it.

In general, stick to older outerwear. Newer shirts can be tailored to match hippie clothes, while newer jackets are more difficult to incorporate.

Hippies Wear – Bottoms

1. Choose Denim Bell Bottoms

Faded, ripped, or patched jeans will work if the rest of the ensemble is sufficiently hippy, but the denim bell bottoms are the holy grail of hippie’s bottoms. These were worn by both men and women and are a mainstay of hippie culture.

2. Purchase Some Denim Shorts

Get some denim shorts, preferably tattered or shredded ones. Or, even better, repurpose your old ones by fraying, shredding, or tearing them. Make your old jeans into cutoffs if you are a man. And if you are a woman, consider converting your old pants into short shorts.

3. If You Are A Lady, Make Use Of Your Alternatives

As a woman, you have a lot more options when it comes to bottoms. Take advantage of it! You have a lot of hippies wear possibilities if the weather permits. Consider:

  • Loose, flowing skirts (think gypsy style)
  • Tunics and sundresses are examples of dresses.
  • Mini- or micro-skirts are also acceptable (especially if paired with above-the-knee boots).

If you are a man, don’t worry! Many male hippies wore robes or skirts, as well. There are skirts designed just for males. Wear what feels right to you, regardless of gender.

Hippies Footwear

1. Select The Appropriate Sandal Or Flip-Flop

Though hippies make a point of wearing barefoot, they frequently wore flat sandals when this isn’t possible. Birkenstocks are the sandals most commonly associated with hippies. They feature cork bottoms and a leather top. Leather flip-flops are another option. They are simple to put on and take off, and they go well with dresses and skirts.

2. Put On A Pair Of Hippy Boots

Try on some boots, especially if it’s chilly outside or if you want to spruce up your attire. Hippie boots are often made of suede or leather and can be mistaken for booties in a pinch.

3. Wear Moccasins

Moccasins of any style will do, but they must be comfortable. Many moccasins will feature beadwork on the shoe.

Hippies Accessories

1. Put On Carefully Chosen Artisan Jewelry

You get extra points if you make your own. For a hippy vibe, try the following items of jewelry:

  • Macrame and long beaded necklaces
  • Stones that are natural
  • Seashells
  • Charms of peace
  • Earrings that are large and ethnically inspired

2. Select Your Belt

A broad leather belt, a peace sign belt, or a chain belt would look great. Anything that screams “DIY” or “vintage” is fair game. If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, a basic shoelace may be threaded through your belt loops and knotted in a bow knot.

3. Think Of Adding Fringes

Add fringes to your garments if you don’t mind modifying them. In fact, you should add fringes to whatever you can get away with. This was done on jeans, shirts, vests, coats, and everything else that could possibly be fringed back in the day.

4. Make Your Garments Embroidered And Your Face Painted

Embroider brightly colored flowers, stars, birds, and messages such as “love” and “peace” on your hippies wear. As part of the anti-war movement, American flag patches, pins, and motifs are also popular. Face paint may be used to beautify yourself for special events.

5. Put Some Ankle Bells On

You’ll be able to hear them coming from a mile away, but you’ll be an authentic hippie.

6. Opt For A Pair Of Granny Glasses Or Sunglasses

The thick, black-rimmed spectacles of the 1950s were replaced by the little, half-moon granny glasses of this era. If history repeats itself, these will be the next targets!

Hippie Hair And Make-Up

1. Keep Your Hair As Simple As Possible

Maintain your hair by leaving it long, loose, and low-maintenance. There should be no chemicals in it. Leave your facial hair rough and untamed if you’re a male. If you must tie your hair up, do it in a low ponytail, two low ponytails, or a braid.

2. Think About Obtaining Dreadlocks

Dreadlocks are notoriously tough to obtain, but they are well worth the effort if you believe you can pull them off. They have been a labor of love.

3. Wear As Little Make-Up As Possible

For ladies, go almost completely naked. A little black kohl outlining your eyes is OK, but nothing more. Avoid lipstick and any other outlandish, visible coloring. You’re a child of the earth, after all.
